The brief

Houston-based The Knight School offers kid-focused chess classes for all skill levels, building strategic thinking and supporting achievement. Founded in 2007 by Dr. David Brooks, the idea began as a high school chess team and quickly expanded to elementary and preschool classrooms throughout central Alabama. The Knight School now brings this unique, high-energy, curriculum-based approach to teaching chess to learning centers, schools, and after-care facilities in over 18 metropolitan areas nationwide.

The challenge

The Knight School had an effective — albeit time-consuming — selection process for its candidates. As the events of 2020 began to unfold, it needed to pivot and create talent acquisition efficiencies without sacrificing the ability to vet candidate quality. Since its process took longer than its competitors, The Knight School found itself unable to compete with more agile organizations that did not verify a candidate’s qualifications and therefore extended offers more quickly.

The solution

To save time and create efficiencies, while upholding its standards of hiring excellency, The Knight School replaced its interview process with an on-demand interview instead. This let the organization preserve its interview question template, while completely transforming the interview format into a candidate-friendly experience — one that moved quickly, mitigated candidates’ scheduling constraints, and eliminated the potential for time-consuming, back-and-forth email communications.
